Barbarians 10 V Imperial 3 23rd January 2010

Barbarians break Imperial’ league run

On Saturday Imperial’s undefeated league record came to an end when Barbarians turned up for the first half and Imperial didn’t. Whether it was a hangover from Tuesdays game or complacency on the part of the Imperial team who knows but they were seriously under par.

Barbarians took advantage of this lack luster performance and never let Imperial settle on the ball and kept them pinned down in their own half. Too many Imperial players looked like they hadn’t turned up and this gave Bar bars hope of an impressive victory.

The first half saw Ross Hickery’s early penalty canceled out to make it 3 - 3 and then a trade mark run from Barbarians veteran number 8 saw Skuse score from 20 meters out. The second half was a lot better from Imperial as Barbarians only got into the oppositions half twice. But a combination of Barbarian passion and dogged defending and some woeful refereeing coupled with Imperial starting to panic as time ran out saw them lose their first league game this season 10 - 3 and credit to Barbarians they deserved their victory.

For Imperial there will have to be some changes either in personnel or mentally before they play Broad Plain at home on Saturday as this will be another passionate local derby.

Captain’s Comments

One of the poorest halves of rugby was played by us on Saturday and the pre match warm up warnings were not heeded. Heads have to be switched on for Saturday and Broad Plain need to be on the end of a personal and team back lash after the way we played on Saturday. It is one thing blaming the ref who did make some wrong decisions but if we had played to the best of our ability then we would have scored enough points for him not to have effected the game.

Heads on lads: that is the first and last slip up if we want to reach out true potential and get promotion let alone win the league.
